Colac, Victoria: A Stroll Down Australia's Most Overlooked Yet Bewilderingly Entertaining Main Street

submitted on 12 June 2023 by auslistings.org

The Absurdity of Colac's Existence

Colac, Victoria: A small town in Australia, nestled between the beautifully desolate plains of the Otways and the equally desolate Lake Colac, where you can observe the philosophical concept of "nothingness" taking a bath. A place founded on the premise that people would willingly leave the comfort of their homes to travel to a remote location to purchase wool from sheep. They were right, for a while. But now, Colac has been left in the dust, with its only claim to fame being its proximity to the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles, which are, by the way, just large rocks in the ocean. Rocks, people. Yet somehow, this sleepy town has held on to its existence, with a tenacity that rivals a barnacle clinging to the hull of a ship. It's a place that will make you wonder, "Why am I here?" But don't worry, you won't be the first to ask that question, nor the last.

The Main Street Experience: A Stroll into the Twilight Zone

Colac's main street, also known as Murray Street, is a fascinating collection of shops, cafes, and pubs that seem to exist in a perpetual state of the 1980s. As you stroll down the street, you'll be forgiven for wondering if you've stepped into a time warp or perhaps a poorly produced movie set that's been abandoned for decades.Colac's main street boasts attractions such as the Memorial Square, which features a cenotaph that honors the fallen soldiers of World War I and II. It's a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by people who fought for the very freedom we now enjoy, allowing us to revel in the absurdity of Colac without fear of retribution from a dictatorship that would undoubtedly have better taste. As you continue your journey, you'll pass by the Colac Cinemas, a venue that still believes in the power of a good VHS tape and a box of stale popcorn to woo the masses into submission. And if you're lucky, you might even catch a screening of a cult classic like "The Room," a film that makes about as much sense as Colac's continued existence.

Botanic Gardens: Colac's Ode to Greenery

Should you feel the need to cleanse your palate from the bemusement of Murray Street, make your way to the Colac Botanic Gardens. Here, you'll discover a lush oasis of flora and fauna that seems to defy the arid surroundings. The gardens are home to a delightful mix of native and exotic plants, including, to my utter amazement, a giant Californian Redwood tree, which appears to have been planted by a homesick lumberjack with a twisted sense of irony. If you're feeling peckish after your botanical escapades, grab a bite to eat at the Gardens Lake Café, a culinary establishment that has managed to defy the odds and serve surprisingly tasty food in the midst of the Colac wilderness. I can only assume the chef is some sort of sorcerer, conjuring edible delights from the very ether.

The Great Ocean Road: Colac's Saving Grace

As previously mentioned, Colac's primary claim to fame is its proximity to the Great Ocean Road, a breathtaking stretch of coastline that has been repeatedly voted as Australia's most beautiful road. This is the only reason I can fathom that anyone would willingly venture to Colac, and I must admit, it's a strong one.Meandering along the Great Ocean Road, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of the rugged coastline, pristine beaches, and the aforementioned Twelve Apostles, which, despite my earlier dismissal, are actually quite impressive up close. As you gaze upon these ancient limestone formations, you might even find yourself pondering the futility of existence, much like your recent visit to Colac.

A Final Word on Colac: Embrace the Nonsense

Colac, Victoria, is a place that defies logic, reason, and common sense. It's a town that clings to its existence with the same determination as a stubborn stain on your favorite shirt, refusing to be forgotten and relegated to the annals of history. It's a place where the mundane and the ridiculous live in harmony, creating an atmosphere of bewilderment that is, in its own strange way, endearingly captivating. So if you find yourself in the vicinity of Colac, why not take a stroll down Murray Street, visit the Botanic Gardens, and embark on the Great Ocean Road? Embrace the absurdity and revel in the chaos. After all, in a world that often takes itself far too seriously, sometimes a little nonsense is just what the doctor ordered.
