Cricket, Footy, and Beyond: The Sports that Define an Aussie Weekend

submitted on 9 November 2023 by auslistings.org

A Brief History of Cricket and Footy in Australia

Young, old, tall, short, male, female, professional, amateur - it doesn't matter what you are, a true Aussie weekend is incomplete without at least a passing nod to one of two iconic sports: cricket or Australian Rules Football (AFL). Cricket and footy have become as essential to the Australian identity as Vegemite, kangaroos, and ridiculously oversized roadside attractions.Cricket, the sport of kings, convicts, and everyone in between, has been played Down Under since the early 1800s. The first recorded cricket match took place in Sydney in 1803, and the national team we now call the Baggy Greens began competing internationally in 1877. Since then, the Australians have dominated the world stage, much to the chagrin of the English and other cricket-playing nations. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has become an integral part of Australian sporting culture, with families gathering round the telly after gorging themselves on Christmas leftovers to watch our finest athletes don whites and battle it out on the pitch. But cricket is not the only sport that defines an Aussie weekend. Australian Rules Football (AFL), known colloquially as "footy," is a game that can only be described as a thrilling combination of rugby, soccer, ballet, and an all-out bar brawl. Born in Melbourne in 1859, AFL is the most popular sport in Australia with millions of fans attending matches every year. The AFL Grand Final held at the MCG is the pinnacle of the season, with fans from all over the country flocking to Melbourne to witness the crowning of a new champion.

Other Sports: A Smorgasbord of Athletic Excellence

While cricket and footy may dominate the headlines, the discerning Australian sports enthusiast has a veritable buffet of athletic prowess to choose from. Rugby league, rugby union, and soccer (or "real football" as the rest of the world calls it) all have passionate followings, while basketball, netball, and even ice hockey have their place in the Australian sporting landscape. And let's not forget the lesser-known sports that have captured the hearts and minds of more niche Australian audiences. For example, there's the uniquely terrifying sport of "Finnish baseball," which involves a bat, a ball, and a whole lot of running away from people trying to pelt you with said ball. Or how about "lawn bowls," a deceptively tranquil sport that has been known to incite near-riots on the meticulously manicured greens of suburban Australia. Who knew that rolling small, heavy balls towards a tiny white ball could be so thrilling?

The Cultural Significance of Sport in Australia

Sport has played a pivotal role in shaping Australian culture and identity. From the early days of the colonies, where sport was used as a way to build camaraderie and community, to the modern era of professional athletes and billion-dollar television deals, sport has been a constant thread in the Australian story. It's no accident that our greatest heroes, from Sir Donald Bradman to Cathy Freeman, have been sportspeople. After all, is there anything more Australian than striving for victory against all odds, while simultaneously maintaining a healthy sense of self-deprecation and humility? But it's not just about winning (though winning is always nice). Sport has a unique power to bring people together in a way that transcends race, religion, and social class. There's something truly magical about standing side by side with complete strangers, united in the shared love of a team or athlete, whether it's cheering on your local footy team at a suburban oval or joining the throngs of green-and-gold-clad fans at an international sporting event.

Embracing the Aussie Sporting Experience

So, dear traveler, if you truly want to immerse yourself in Australian culture, you cannot go past the myriad sporting events that take place every weekend across this great land. From the hallowed turf of the MCG to the dusty ovals of the outback, there's a sport for everyone, whether it's cricket, footy, or something a little more obscure.
  • Join the "Richie's" at a cricket match, where fans dress up like the late, great cricket commentator Richie Benaud, complete with silver wigs and cream jackets.
  • Discover the unique charms of country AFL matches, where the pies are hot, the beer is cold, and the halftime entertainment often involves a tractor race or two.
  • Travel to the Top End and experience "Tiwi Islands football," where the local Indigenous teams play a fast, frenetic, and highly entertaining brand of the game.
  • Embrace the weird and wonderful world of suburban sport, from roller derby to quidditch (yes, the Harry Potter sport has made its way to Australia).
Remember, a true Aussie weekend isn't complete without a healthy dose of sport. So, don your team's colors, grab a meat pie, and join the chorus of passionate supporters as you experience the best of Australian sport. After all, there's nothing more Australian than that.
