Gold, Beer & Kangaroos: The Story of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia

submitted on 30 July 2023 by auslistings.org

Once Upon a Gold Rush

Picture this: It's 1893, and two Irish prospectors, Paddy Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Dan Shea, stumble upon a gold nugget in the dusty outback of Western Australia. Little did they know, their discovery would lead to the establishment of Kalgoorlie, a town that would thrive on gold, beer, and kangaroos. Well, not so much the kangaroos – but they certainly add a touch of Australian charm. Over time, the town of Kalgoorlie – or Kalgoorlie-Boulder, to give it its full title – has become home to one of the world's largest open-cut gold mines, the Super Pit. Now, I don't know about you, but when I hear the words "Super Pit," I think of a really impressive hole in the ground – and that's exactly what it is.

Super Pit: A Hole Lotta Gold

The Super Pit is an absolutely massive, gaping hole in the earth that stretches about 3.5 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide, and half a kilometer deep. To say it's impressive would be an understatement – it's like staring into the abyss of human greed, and finding it covered in a fine layer of gold dust. Since its establishment in 1989, the Super Pit has produced over 20 million ounces of gold – that's about $27 billion dollars' worth of shiny metal. Now, I'm no economist, but that seems like a pretty good return on investment for a town that was founded by sheer luck and the pursuit of fortune.

A Town Built on Beer

But what do you do with all that gold? Well, if you're a resident of Kalgoorlie, you drink. A lot. It's said that, back in the early days of the gold rush, the town had around 93 hotels, most of which were watering holes for thirsty miners. Today, Kalgoorlie has a population of just over 30,000 people – but still boasts an impressive number of pubs and bars. One such establishment is the historic Exchange Hotel, built in 1900. With its wide verandas and ornate ironwork, it wouldn't look out of place in New Orleans. The only difference being that, instead of jazz music and beignets, you'll find yourself surrounded by the echoes of gold miners past, and possibly a bar fight or two.

Hannan Street: A Walk to Remember

For a town built on gold, you'd think the streets would be paved with the stuff – and you wouldn't be far off. The main drag of Kalgoorlie, Hannan Street, is lined with beautiful historic buildings, many of which were constructed during the height of the gold rush. Take a leisurely stroll down Hannan Street and you'll find yourself transported back to a time when gold was king, and a miner's only concerns were finding the next big strike and not dying of dysentery.

A Glimpse into the Golden Past

If you want to learn more about the history of Kalgoorlie, look no further than the Kalgoorlie-Boulder WA Museum. This fine establishment houses an array of relics from the town's heyday, including photographs, mining equipment, and even a real-life gold nugget. And if you're looking to immerse yourself in the past, you can also take a guided tour of the historic mines and tunnels that lie beneath the town.

A Race Like No Other

Every year, Kalgoorlie plays host to the famous Race Round – a week-long festival of horse racing, fashion, and general debauchery. But the highlight of the event is undoubtedly the Kalgoorlie Cup, a prestigious horse race that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. It's like the Melbourne Cup, but with more dust, less glamour, and a higher chance of witnessing a drunken brawl. An absolute must-see if you're in town.

Kalgoorlie: An Outback Experience

So, there you have it – the story of Kalgoorlie, a town built on gold, beer, and kangaroos. If you're looking for a unique and entertaining Australian experience, then look no further than this dusty outback gem. Just remember to pack your sunscreen, your sense of adventure, and a healthy appreciation for the absurd. Trust me, you'll need it.
