Clare: The Charming Australian Town that Time (Almost) Forgot

submitted on 13 May 2023 by auslistings.org
When you think of Australia, you probably picture vast golden beaches, koalas clinging to eucalyptus trees, and the bustling metropolises of Sydney and Melbourne. And while we appreciate all those classic Aussie experiences, we'd like to introduce you to a lesser-known corner of the Land Down Under: Clare, South Australia. Located just over 100km north of Adelaide, Clare is a town with a fascinating history, a vibrant cultural scene, and some of the most breathtaking scenery Australia has to offer. So why not join us for a (virtual) stroll through the charming streets of Clare and get to know this delightful destination a bit better?

A Brief History of Clare: From Pastoral Dreams to Vineyard Visions

Clare was founded in 1840 by Edward Gleeson, an Irishman with a penchant for naming places after himself. He dubbed his new settlement 'Inchiquin,' after his ancestral home in Ireland. But apparently, the other settlers weren't as amused by Gleeson's ego as he was, so they renamed the town 'Clare' after the County Clare in Ireland (which presumably had nothing to do with Edward Gleeson). The town grew rapidly thanks to the region's fertile soil and abundant water supply. It wasn't long before Clare became a bustling hub for agriculture, especially sheep farming. But as with any good story, Clare's tale took an unexpected twist. In the 1850s, Jesuit priests arrived in the region to establish churches and schools. And, as luck would have it, these holy men also happened to be avid wine enthusiasts. So, they decided to plant vines on their newly acquired land, and voilà — the Clare Valley wine region was born!

Clare's Cultural Significance: More Than Just a Pretty Place

Clare may be known for its picturesque scenery and world-class wines, but there's much more to this town than meets the eye. In fact, Clare has a rich cultural heritage that's well worth exploring. For starters, the town is home to several historic buildings, including St Michael's Catholic Church, a Gothic Revival masterpiece, and the Old Police Station Museum, where you can learn about Clare's early days as a rough-and-tumble frontier town. And let's not forget the many charming pubs and inns that dot the town's streets, offering visitors a hearty meal and a pint of local brew (just watch out for the occasional cheeky ghost). Clare also has a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries and studios showcasing the work of local artists. And if you're a fan of live music, you won't want to miss the annual Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, which attracts some of Australia's most talented musicians for a weekend of food, wine, and rollicking good tunes.

Must-See Attractions in Clare: Beyond the Vineyards

Of course, no visit to Clare would be complete without a tour of the town's renowned vineyards. But once you've had your fill of Shiraz and Riesling, be sure to check out some of these other attractions:
  • Spring Gully Conservation Park: This lush park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including kangaroos, echidnas, and over 100 species of birds. Be sure to pack a picnic and spend the day exploring the park's numerous walking trails.
  • Bungaree Station: Step back in time and experience life on a 19th-century sheep station at Bungaree. This historic property offers guided tours, accommodation, and even the chance to try your hand at sheep shearing (if you're feeling brave).
  • Martindale Hall: This grand Georgian-style mansion, built in 1879, is the perfect setting for a Downton Abbey-style weekend getaway. Tour the lavish interior, stroll through the magnificent gardens, or book a room and live like a lord or lady for a night.
  • Riesling Trail: Stretching 35km from Auburn to Barinia, this scenic walking and cycling trail takes you past some of the region's most picturesque vineyards and historic landmarks. Just be sure to leave room in your backpack for a bottle or two of your favorite Clare Valley wines.

Clare: The Australian Town that Time (Almost) Forgot

So there you have it: a brief introduction to the wonderful town of Clare, South Australia. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty, Clare truly offers something for everyone. And while it may not be as well-known as some of Australia's more famous destinations, we think that's part of its charm. After all, who wouldn't want to discover a place that feels like it's been plucked from the pages of a storybook? So the next time you find yourself dreaming of a trip to Australia, why not consider trading in the beach for a vineyard, and the city for a charming country town? Trust us — you won't be disappointed.
