Griffith: A Surprisingly Fascinating Journey Through the Outback

submitted on 29 July 2023 by auslistings.org

A Brief History of Griffith

Griffith, found in the New South Wales region of Australia, was originally named after Sir Arthur Griffith, a former Chief Justice and politician. I'm sure the old chap would be delighted to know that a city was named after him, especially one so... interesting.Established in 1916, it was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, an American architect who had a knack for designing cities like he was playing a game of Tetris. Despite its unnatural geometric design, the city has somehow managed to thrive. With its agricultural foundation and Italian heritage, Griffith has become a rather vibrant destination with a surprising bit of culture and history to offer.

Cultural Significance and Little Italy

Now, I'm pretty sure if I were to ask you to name a city with a strong Italian influence in Australia, you might struggle. To be honest, I would have done the same before venturing to Griffith. But as it turns out, Griffith has been labelled as "Little Italy" due to its heavy Italian migration post World War II. Today, about 60% of its population claims Italian-Australian heritage. It's quite an oddity really, to venture through the Australian outback only to stumble upon a town that feels more like a European vacation. Perhaps you would never have thought that you could enjoy wine tasting and sampling various Italian dishes like you're in Tuscany, but here we are. If you're in Griffith, be sure to visit the Calabria Family Wines or the De Bortoli Wines Bilbul Estate for a taste of Italy in the land down under.

Hermit's Cave: A Tale of One Man's Reclusive Adventure

As you traverse through Griffith, you might come across the peculiar Hermit's Cave. This is not your usual tourist attraction, dear adventurer. This cave was the home to a reclusive individual by the name of Valerio Ricetti, an Italian migrant who decided that living in a cave for 17 years was a better choice than participating in society.During his time in the cave, Ricetti managed to create a small garden, with an array of fruit trees, vegetables and even a fish pond. His handcrafted stone walls, furniture, and pathways have now become a rather intriguing attraction. Though Ricetti's days in the cave have long passed, one cannot help but wonder what drove a man to retreat from society and create his own little paradise within a cave.

Griffith's Unusual Festivals

As if Griffith hadn't provided enough unexpected surprises, the city also offers a variety of peculiar events and festivals throughout the year. For example, the Griffith Spring Fest celebrates all things garden-related, with the crowning jewel being the "Real Juice Company Citrus Sculptures". Now, you might be thinking, "What in the world are citrus sculptures?" Well, let me enlighten you. These are enormous sculptures made from over 100,000 oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. It's a sight to behold, and perhaps one of the most unique art forms you'll ever encounter.

Visit the Griffith Pioneer Park Museum

If you fancy a trip down memory lane and want to learn more about Griffith's history, the Pioneer Park Museum is worth a visit. This open-air museum offers a glimpse into the past, with over 40 historical buildings and displays to explore. Plus, it's not every day you have the opportunity to walk through a replica Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Office, now, is it?

Admire the Bizarre Beauty of Lake Wyangan

On the outskirts of Griffith, you'll find Lake Wyangan, an artificial lake created in the 1920s for irrigation purposes. However, despite its practical origins, the lake has become a rather picturesque spot for picnics, birdwatching, and serene walks. It's a true testament to mankind's ability to create something beautiful out of necessity.

Final Thoughts on Griffith

Griffith, New South Wales, is not your typical tourist destination, and that's precisely what makes it so intriguing. From its Italian heritage to its peculiar festivals and attractions, this city in the Australian outback offers a multitude of surprises for the intrepid traveller. So, the next time you find yourself venturing through Australia, why not take a detour and experience the unique charm of Griffith for yourself?
