Lake Hillier: Australia's Pink Lake Unmasked

submitted on 10 December 2023 by auslistings.org

How Did I Find Myself in a Pink Lake?

As an intrepid adventurer and journalist, I’ve found myself in some pretty peculiar situations. I’ve wrestled with Australian wombats, sipped tea with an English badger, and even been engaged in a heated debate on the merits of Vegemite with a disgruntled kangaroo – I'm not kidding. But nothing prepared me for the day I found myself ankle-deep in a bubblegum-hued lake on a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. It's a place that challenges the imagination and forces you to rethink your understanding of the world. The lake in question: Lake Hillier, a saline lake on Middle Island that, for reasons still not entirely understood by science, is a brilliant shade of pink. And let me be clear, this isn’t a subtle salmon or a watered-down rose – we’re talking full-on, fluorescent pink. I mean, if a fairy godmother got drunk at a bachelorette party, this is the kind of lake she’d accidentally conjure up.

Where Did This Pink Paradise Come From?

Lake Hillier isn’t some bizarre natural wonder that popped into existence out of thin air like the platypus (I mean, seriously Australia, what were you thinking?). No, this enigma of a lake has been confounding explorers for years. British navigator and cartographer Matthew Flinders first stumbled upon the lake in 1802, and despite having lugged a particularly heavy sextant around the world, he couldn’t make heads or tails of the peculiar pink hue.Theories abound as to why the lake is so flamboyantly pink, with the most widely accepted hypothesis suggesting that it’s due to the presence of a specific type of microalgae called Dunaliella salina. These microscopic party animals are known for their pinkish-red pigment and have an affinity for salty environments, making Lake Hillier the perfect spot for their never-ending pink rave. But why these microscopic guests have decided to take their talents to this particular corner of the world remains a mystery, and it’s a mystery I intend to solve – or at least marvel at from a distance while sipping on a piña colada.

A Cultural Phenomenon Worth its Salt

So, what’s the story behind this rosy landmark? Well, back in the day (the 19th century, to be precise), Lake Hillier was a hot spot for salt mining. In fact, the lake was named after an early salt miner, William Hillier. Imagine having a lake named after you for mining salt! As if that’s some kind of accomplishment! I mean, I’ve eaten an entire jar of pickles in one sitting and no one’s naming any lakes after me (not that I’m bitter or anything).Alas, the salt mining boom was short-lived, and by the early 20th century, Lake Hillier’s glory days were behind it. Today, the lake and its surrounding islands are part of the Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve, a protected area teeming with wildlife like sea lions, fur seals, and a cast of quirky seabirds who seem unimpressed by their uniquely hued neighbor. Just like the rest of Australia, Lake Hillier is home to some truly bizarre and wonderful creatures, and it’s the kind of destination that makes you feel like Alice stepping through the looking glass into Wonderland.

How to Experience Lake Hillier for Yourself

While the idea of splashing about in a pink lake might sound like a dream come true, Lake Hillier isn’t exactly a day at the beach. The lake is located on Middle Island, a remote and inaccessible speck of land in the vast Indian Ocean. You’ll need to hitch a ride on a chartered flight or boat to even catch a glimpse of this pink paradise, but trust me, it’s worth the effort. There’s something almost otherworldly about seeing a lake that looks like it was filled with melted Pepto-Bismol, and it’s the kind of sight that will stick with you long after you’ve left the shores of Middle Island.Still, if you’re hell-bent on dipping your toes in the lake’s pink waters, you can arrange a guided tour of the island and lake through a local operator. Just be prepared to answer some probing questions from border patrol about why exactly you want to visit a pink lake in the middle of nowhere. I’ve found that offering them a jar of pickles usually does the trick.

A Road Less Traveled: Embracing the Oddities of Nature

At the end of the day, Lake Hillier is a testament to the unending oddities and mysteries of the natural world. Whether the result of microscopic algae or a tipsy fairy godmother, this pink oasis is a reminder that sometimes the most captivating destinations are the ones that defy explanation and challenge our understanding of the world around us.So, if you find yourself feeling stifled by the monotony of everyday life, consider stepping off the well-trodden path and embracing the peculiar and unexpected. Trust me, there’s no better cure for boredom than a pink lake in the middle of nowhere.
